David Stevens
David Stevens is a partner in the Business Law Department in Gowlings’ Toronto office. His practice focuses exclusively on corporate tax, personal tax planning and charities.
He is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario (BA, 1976 and LLB, 1979), Cambridge University, England (LLB, 1980) and Université de Montréal (LLB, 1986 and DDN, 1989). He was a law professor at the Faculty of Law, McGill University from 1983 to 1999.
Mr. Stevens has presented and written extensively on Charity Law, and his most recent presentations include “Building the Foundation for a Harmonious Society: A Canada-China Collaborative Study on the Legislation of China Charity Enhancement Law,” International Symposium on Charity Development, (UBC) (July 5-7, 2006); “Update on Vicarious Liability in the Charity Sector,” CBA 4th National Symposium on Charity Law, (May 11, 2006); “Charity Law Update,” LSUC Six-Minute Estates Lawyer (March 22, 2006).
Mr. Stevens is currently a member of the Canadian Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the Canadian Tax Foundation, the International Fiscal Association, the Editorial Board of the Philanthropist, the International Academy of Trust and Estates Lawyers, and the Law Society of Upper Canada.
He is listed in Woodward Best Lawyers in Canada 2006 (Trusts and Estates) and LEXPERT’s Canada’s Leading Practitioners 2004, 2005 and 2006 (Charities).
