Board of Directors and Advisory Council

Marie-France Giroux has agreed to serve on the Board of AHED. She is an attending physician at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Montréal (CHUM) and the Montreal Cardiac Institute and a faculty member at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Montreal.

Jeffrey C. Fine has joined AHED’s Advisory Council. He is an independent consultant specializing on policy issues involving developing countries to various government and international agencies, including the World Bank, the Canadian International Development Agency, USAID, the International Development Research Centre, and the Partnership for Education in Africa, among many others.

Projects

Recently Completed Projects

In January of 2010, James Cranston, the former Chief Information Officer at Simon Fraser University did an assessment of the University of Liberia’s Information Technology needs. The report has been presented to Dr. Emmet Dennis, the president of the University of Liberia. The McCall – MacBain Foundation funded the project.

On Going Projects

The State Islamic University in Yogyakarta has established a Centre for Disabilities Studies and Services. It is the first university in Indonesia to provide services for disabled students. The Centre’s goals include developing awareness of inclusive education both within and outside the university and implementing changes in the university in Indonesia to accommodate disabled students. AHED is providing a volunteer, Marion Steff, who is spending a year at the Centre (August 2009- July 2010) to assist it in developing its capacity through workshops, fundraising, lectures and research. Future Projects

AHED is organizing a Workshop on science at the University of Liberia for the summer of 2010. The Workshop leaders for the project are Adam Cohen, Ben Rapoport and Elizabeth Wood. Adam is an assistant professor of chemistry at Harvard, Ben is a medical student there and a doctoral student at MIT in computer science, and Elizabeth is a graduate student at MIT in civil, environmental and biological engineering. The McCall – MacBain Foundation is providing funds for this project.

AHED is assisting the National University of Rwanda to upgrade its Registrar’s Office. This project will take place during 2010 and 2011. The project leader is Gudrun Currie, who is a faculty member in the School of Management at Dalhousie University and was the Registrar (1975 – 1987) at University of Toronto at Scarborough, Toronto, Ontario and the University Registrar (1987 – 2000) at Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia . She will be assisted by Carole Dence, who is a consultant on higher education teaching and was the Registrar (1982 – 1990) at the Faculties of Arts and Social Sciences, Carleton University, Ottawa, Ontario.
